Instructions for Reviewers

The Journal of Clinical Trials depends on the dedication and expertise of peer reviewers to uphold the quality, integrity, and scientific value of the research we publish. Peer review is the cornerstone of our editorial process, and we are deeply grateful for the time and insight that reviewers contribute.

This guide outlines the responsibilities, ethical standards, and best practices for reviewers invited to evaluate manuscripts submitted to the journal.

✦ Purpose of Peer Review

Reviewers play a critical role in:

  • Evaluating the scientific rigor, clinical relevance, and ethical compliance of submitted manuscripts.
  • Providing constructive, unbiased feedback to help authors improve the quality of their work.
  • Assisting editors in making fair, transparent, and evidence-based editorial decisions.

✦ Reviewer Responsibilities

1. Timely Response

  • Accept or decline the review invitation within 3 business days.
  • Submit your review within 14 days of accepting the assignment.
  • Request extensions only, if necessary, to avoid unnecessary delays.

2. Scope of Review

Evaluate the manuscript based on the following criteria:

  • Originality and significance of the research question
  • Appropriateness of the trial design and methodology
  • Accuracy and clarity of data analysis and interpretation
  • Ethical adherence (e.g., informed consent, trial registration, IRB approval)
  • Relevance and quality of references
  • Clarity, structure, and coherence of the writing

3. Providing Feedback

  • Submit your review using the structured online review form.
  • Write comments in two sections:
    • Comments to the Author: Constructive, respectful, and actionable suggestions.
    • Comments to the Editor: Confidential insights, concerns, or recommendations.

Use clear, professional language. Avoid personal remarks or vague criticisms. Support your statements with evidence when possible.

4. Recommendation Categories

You may recommend one of the following:

  • Accept without revisions
  • Minor revisions required
  • Major revisions required
  • Reject

The final decision rests with the editor, who may also consult multiple reviewers’ opinions.

Confidentiality

Do not share, discuss, or use the content of the manuscript for personal or professional purposes. Maintain strict confidentiality throughout and after the review process.

Conflict of Interest

Immediately declare any potential conflicts (personal, financial, academic, or institutional) and recuse yourself if impartiality is compromised.

Objectivity

Evaluate the manuscript fairly and without bias. Reviews should be based solely on academic and clinical merit, not on nationality, gender, institutional affiliation, or authorship.

Plagiarism and Misconduct

Report any signs of:

  • Plagiarism or duplicate publication
  • Data manipulation or fabrication
  • Ethical violations or lack of trial registration

These concerns will be further investigated by the editorial team.

✦ Recognition and Reviewer Credit

We value the contributions of our reviewers and may offer:

  • Reviewer certificates upon request
  • Consideration for editorial board roles

You may also opt to receive recognition through platforms such as Publons or ORCID (upon integration).
