Instructions for Reviewers

The Journal of Nephrology relies on the expertise and dedication of peer reviewers to maintain scientific integrity, improve manuscript quality, and support objective editorial decisions. This guide outlines the responsibilities, expectations, and ethical principles for reviewers involved in the evaluation process.

1. Role of the Reviewer

Reviewers play a critical role by:

  • Assessing the scientific validity, originality, and clinical or academic relevance of submitted manuscripts.
  • Providing constructive, unbiased, and timely feedback.
  • Helping editors make well-informed publication decisions.
  • Contributing to the advancement of nephrology research and clinical practice.

2. Reviewer Responsibilities

Reviewers are expected to:

  • Maintain confidentiality of the manuscript content and review process.
  • Declare any conflict of interest and decline if unable to provide an impartial review.
  • Submit reviews within the agreed deadline (usually within 2–3 weeks).
  • Provide feedback that is respectful, evidence-based, and focused on improving the manuscript.
  • Avoid personal, judgmental, or vague remarks.

3. Evaluation Criteria

When reviewing a manuscript, consider the following:

  • Originality: Is the research novel or does it replicate existing work?
  • Relevance: Does it align with the journal’s scope and the field of nephrology?
  • Methodology: Are study design, sampling, and analysis appropriate and clearly described?
  • Results & Interpretation: Are findings well-presented, logical, and statistically sound?
  • Ethical Considerations: Is there appropriate mention of ethics approval and informed consent?
  • Clarity: Is the manuscript clearly written and well-organized?

Please structure your review under the following headings:

  • Summary: A brief overview of the manuscript.
  • Major Concerns: Critical issues that must be addressed (e.g., methodological flaws, data gaps).
  • Minor Concerns: Suggestions for clarity, grammar, or formatting improvements.
  • Recommendation: Choose one of the following:
    • Accept
    • Minor Revision
    • Major Revision
    • Reject

5. Confidentiality & Ethics

  • Do not share the manuscript or use its content for personal or professional benefit.
  • Report any suspicion of plagiarism, ethical misconduct, or data fabrication to the editorial office.
  • Avoid reviewing manuscripts where a conflict of interest exists (e.g., recent collaboration with authors, personal relationships).

6. Recognition & Contribution

We value our reviewers and acknowledge their efforts through:

  • Annual recognition certificates.
  • Listing on the journal’s website (optional).
  • Eligibility to be considered for the journal’s Reviewer Excellence Award.
