The Journal of Biomedical Engineering (JBE) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of scientific integrity and transparency. To ensure that only high-quality and impactful research is published, all manuscripts submitted to JBE undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process.
This process ensures fairness, objectivity, and constructive evaluation by experts in the field of biomedical engineering.
1. Initial Screening
- Upon submission, manuscripts are first assessed by the Editor-in-Chief or an Associate Editor.
- At this stage, manuscripts are evaluated for:
- Relevance to the journal’s scope.
- Adherence to author guidelines.
- Basic scientific quality and originality.
- Plagiarism and ethical compliance.
- Manuscripts failing to meet these requirements may be returned to authors without external review.
2. Reviewer Assignment
- Suitable reviewers with expertise in the relevant subject area are carefully selected.
- The journal follows a double-blind review system, where:
- Authors do not know the identity of reviewers.
- Reviewers do not know the identity of authors.
- At least two independent reviewers are typically invited for each manuscript.
3. Review Process
Reviewers are asked to evaluate manuscripts based on:
- Originality and novelty of the work.
- Scientific rigor and validity of methods.
- Significance of results and contribution to the field.
- Clarity, structure, and completeness of the manuscript.
- Ethical standards in human/animal research, where applicable.
Reviewers provide:
- A detailed report with major and minor comments.
- A recommendation: Accept, Minor Revision, Major Revision, or Reject.
4. Editorial Decision
- The handling editor reviews all reviewer reports and makes a balanced decision.
- Decisions are communicated clearly to authors along with reviewers’ comments.
- If revisions are required, authors are expected to address all comments point-by-point before resubmission.
5. Revision and Re-Review
- Revised manuscripts may be sent back to the original reviewers for further evaluation.
- Editors ensure that the authors’ responses adequately address the reviewers’ concerns.
6. Final Decision
- The Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision on acceptance or rejection.
- Accepted manuscripts move into the production stage for copyediting, formatting, and online publication.
7. Appeals and Complaints
- Authors may appeal editorial decisions by providing a detailed justification.
- Appeals will be reviewed by the editorial board, and an independent evaluation may be sought if necessary.
8. Commitment to Transparency and Fairness
- JBE ensures that all decisions are based solely on scientific merit.
- Conflicts of interest are carefully managed throughout the process.
- The peer review system is designed to provide authors with constructive feedback while safeguarding research integrity.
The peer review process at the Journal of Biomedical Engineering is designed to uphold academic excellence, encourage innovation, and ensure that published work contributes meaningfully to the global biomedical engineering community.
